Damn...

...I haven't posted much lately... not counting that last one as it was more of a forgotten draft from a couple months ago.

Well, the semester is getting ready to start up again so perhaps I will find some motivation to post a little more consistently. In the meantime, here is a round-up of sketch-book pieces that I have done over the past few months!

These are a few from late in the semester that were not class related, so I didn't post them:

I didn't get nearly as much "art" done this Summer as I would have wanted... between moving to a new apartment and all the upheaval associated with such an endeavor. Towards the end of the Summer I got a little antsy and decided to try to "play around" a bit. I came to consciously notice that I have a tendency to doodle without purpose in lined notebooks (you should see my notebooks from college! A wealth of sketching ideas...) so I picked up a couple line Moleskine journals and voila!

After that I decided to get a little silly and shade them:

In-keeping with my "just f'n around" theme I decided to get really silly and (since I noticed in doing the above shading that alcohol based markers are not the best thing to use on the thin paper of a simple Moleskine journal) hit them again using some of those very inexpensive (water based) Crayola markers:

This led to a whole group of rapid sketches:

I think it was about this time I got sick of drawing/coloring on these lined pages... they are fine
for pen and pencil, but the paper is just too thin for a marker, regardless of whether it's alcohol
or water based.

That being said, I started to really like the way these cheap markers were blending... since they are so inexpensive, I had little concern about fouling the tips by repeated layering, and I got some wonderful effects! First, I went back and attacked some of my earlier sketches with color...

...achieving mostly favorable results... Then I did a couple new sketches and colored them in, too:

... fun fun.

But just as I was about to go color Crayola crazy, I just worked on this piece last night :)
Nice to get back to basics...

Semester Round-up part III: Drawing

Okay, I know I've ranted about my drawing class before -- but despite my frustrations with it I do think that it has helped me in my drawing, regardless of how I define my approach. Interestingly enough, I feel that my color theory class actually helped me to embrace the lessons my instructor was trying to impart in me...

...so without further ado, here are a few from the last couple classes!

I took 3 compositions, 2 different paper types, and 2 different types of media to create a series of 7 paintings exploring various color relationships from Analogous, Complementary, and Split-complementary. By doing this, I also was able to explore more complex color concepts such as warm cool and push/pull.

I would like to be posting more, but I must admit that this winter has exhausted me emotionally and mentally... tons of snow, never a "Winter Thaw", it's nearly May and the other day was 40ish degrees and rainy-- add to that work, school, and an exorbitant amount of homework (which I admit that I sort of dropped the ball on... oops! ) and I just lost time to keep this going.

...but I never gave up!

Drawing Class... as of the "break"

Here are a ton of quick 5-10 minute poses from my drawing class so far this semester -- it is important to note that this is the second time I am taking this class (by choice).

When I first enrolled in this class the first time last year, I was under the assumption that it was a Life-Drawing Class...

I spent a good portion of the semester trying to resolve that I was not supposed to be practiving the poses and anatomy (which is what I wanted to do)...

...but rather I was supposed to be using the figure (as well as the whole scene) as
a vehicle for my drawing.

A different perspective than what I was used to, for sure... but anything to help me reinforce my observational skills.

Now, though I am in this class for a second time, I am still struggling with some of the ideas and concepts that the teacher is putting forth...

You see, he is an Abstract Expressionist, so it's not about the subject...

I admit, I need to reinforce my seeing and not use line as much...

BUT...

Similar to last year, we are not doing any poses for more than 10 minutes.

This frustrates me.

I am beginning to just throw up my arms and not care.

I hear what he is saying... I think I get what he is trying to convey...

I just don't know if I buy it...

I just want to be a better draughtsman.

Going back to what I originally thought this class was going to be, I want to learn some good fundamental and classical drawing skills -- to cultivate what I have, and learn ones I don't.

ugh...

My art is my art, after-all... I want to express myself...

but not expressionisticly or abstractly...

...and all the "exploration of self in the making of marks..." and "allowing the boredom of an object allow something to grow from it" aint gonna achieve that (for me).

For my work, what will work is being frickin' good at drawing.
Like scary good.

I feel my skill is the stumbling block and, unfortunately, this class is not doing enough (but certainly not nothing) to help me grow those skills.

I want to be a realist.

NOT A PHOTO-REALIST, MIND YOU!!!

I believe in "the Artists Vision" taking life in work... and photorealism always seems to jump the uncanny valley into weird and "why bother" category.

So I just stumbled upon this unfinished post from last Summer in my unpublished drafts...

I remember riding down to this abandoned length of rail-road, hoping that time would have eroded enough of the old ties, but alas it was overgrown and far too jarring to ride on...

It did, however, provide me with a nice opportunity to take a few nice photographs :)

Yes, even with suspension, it was too bumpy (like riding on a giant washboard... no fun).

This stretch of old railway is just begging to be turned into a Multi-use path or "rail trail". It would provide a perfect link between Fresh Pond and the stretch of the CRBP in Watertown.

"A very important element in, especially drawings and paintings, is value (or tone).
In this context, value means light and dark. Sometimes referred to by the Italian
word 'chiaroscuro' (literally “light/dark”), value is often described visually by
a scale with varying shades of gray arranged between black and white

So, I have been thinking a lot ("alot" ... lol) lately about composition. Not "where should I put stuff" type of composition, but the down and dirty balance of lights and darks in a given image...

Many of people over the years have said and written (I shall paraphrase the many things I have read in my own words)) that a great painting is still good image even if in black and white... this has everything to do with the values/light and dark/contrast/etc... in the image, itself.

As a result; I have gone back through many of my pieces, both old and new, and done two things:

1) Made it greyscale.

2) eliminated all middle-tones to get a pure b&w breakdown of the piece.

"Why?!" I hear you all screaming through the tubez of the intrawebs... because I don't really have a flipping idea of what "good composition" IS!!

REALLY... I don't. I have always relied on "gee... that looks good!" and 96/100 percent of the time, that works. Unfortunately it doesn't work all of the time

As I go through a few of my most recent paintings, as well as a few others I have done in recent years, and apply this newly realized "critical eye", I find something interesting...

(So please; talk to me if you think I am wrong! {I love a good debate... and who knows?!
you could be right!})

all my work (that I tested) has a pretty nice dark to light balance going on in it,

Now, it's not quite Golden Mean but it does (again... I think) have a pretty nice dance between
the lights and darks; it certainly aint boring...

It's hard to eliminate the subject matter from consideration; but it's important to do so in this exercise. I really want the elimination of color and tone to abstract the image to a pure value scale of black and white... pure shapes of to values intermingling...

I think it worked :P

Okay okay... like I said above; I am not always successful in my composition... these pieces are not ALL of my "successes", but even if I were to show all my "successes", they would not nearly be half the breadth of work that I have created that was "un-successful" ...

...compositionally.

So I want to figure out why the ones that are successful ARE SUCCESSFUL... and I think that this little experiment (along with some in depth research into the subjects of art history, composition, ratio, etc...) are just what the proverbial doctor ordered...

...we shall see...

Yes... I know I talked about this a few months back; but I never followed up on it... bad me!! But truth be told... I did work on this a lot, considering the schedule, lack of time, schoolwork, etc...
the SAD thing is, I barely finished 30% of the damn thing.

So, it's been nearly 3 months since my last post, so there is a lot to catch up on!

Here are the progress photographs for my dulcimer building class over the past semester since we last spoke...

and everyone progressed at their own pace

Here's a quick image of the fingerboard with the strum hollow already cut out.

Now this I found fascinating -- Here is an apparantly ancient (as in way way back almost to stone-age times) way of clamping two boards together, lengthwise, so that they are glued together both straight and level...

...and all it is is a wedge, block, and a rope... genius!

Various tools: Japanese saw, narrow kerf saw (with guide), various planes, and a chisel.

By this point, the frets have been positioned and installed.

For various stages of this project, I used up to 600 grit sand-paper...

The top of a dulcimer, like a guitar, needs to have sound holes. I decided to mostly stick with a traditional look, but to spice it up just a tad by getting a little adventurous...

making sound-holes on one side,
and then mirror the design on the OTHER side with inlays.

This one part was probably the most labor intensive element of the whole process... a lot of sanding, filing, fitting, filing, breaking, trying again... etc... took about 5 hours of total work.

SMFA, Week 2

So I began my next illustration class last Monday; in addition to that, I had my second class in Dulcimer and Guitar building! Most of this class was centered around shop safety... which I have no problem with, since being kissed by a table-saw some years back.

There was not a lot to do this class except for the "glue-up" of the blocks, as you see below:

as you might be able to tell from the picture below, I am considering making this dulcimer assymetrical. I am not sure how it will look, but after seeing a few examples of other assymetrical dulcimers, I think that that is what I am going for.

the sketchbook project!

So I have decided to participate in "the Sketchbook Project", an interesting project put forth by the Art House Co-op.

My sketchbook arrived the other day!

EMPTY!! ... but not for long!

Part of the project is to pick a "theme" to act as a jumping off point... there are many to choose from, but I decided to go for Coffee & Cigarettes. I am not sure what I know about tobacco products, but me and the most classic of the vehicles of caffeine delivery go way back...

So yeah, as my involvement in this project evolves, I shall be posting about it (along with my SMFA adventures this semester) so be on the lookout for "sketchbook project" tagged entries!

101 POSTS (and "Back to School" Fall, 2010)!!

OK, OK, OK... I know I haven't posted much over the Summer, but well... IT WAS SUMMER!! I was busy! I hope you were, too! I know some of the 2 or 3 of you that watch this blog were busy... you told me ;)

but anyhow...

The time of scholarly pursuits is again upon us... the mildewy and musty smell of the "newly removed from the hope chest" Harvard, BU, and BC tweed has begun to, once again, waft through the streets... the scent of formaldehyde and machinery lubricant has again started to emanate from the lab coats of MIT and Wentworth... the linseed oil, charcoal, and photochemical soaked rags of the students from MassArt and School of the Museum of Fine Arts have permeated the air... and, of course, the acrid and repellent funk of cheap beer, bad decisions, "(Lol), I'm at coll--edge (hic) and wikkid drunk (lol)", & regurgitated Mexican food has mingled to bring the familiar aroma of Fall to the Boston area...

Yes, I too was part of this collegiate onslaught; this ravenous desire to learn.

So I begin my Fall semester at the SMFA.

Woodworking!! Specifically... building a Dulcimer!

Now, I have toyed with the odd woodworking project before (post occurs in the future ;), so I know my way around things like a 2"x4" and a Japanese pull saw... but when it it comes to building a musical instrument?

I am noob at best...

So I have this theory that, after you clip your finger/toenails, they exist in an acceptable state for a certain amount of time until they arbitrarily decide to start growing at some accelerated pace... you know, one day they are totally fine, and the next you are accidentally plucking out your eye or inadvertently drawing your co-workers blood because somehow these swords have issued from your fingertips... and though my fingernails and toenails were (at one point and for as far back as I can recall) on the same schedule; somehow they have recently fallen out of sync...

...anyhow, enough of this nonsense; a blog post soon about the Cape Cod Getaway I recently participated in.

...ha! get it? no?? well nevermind, then ;)

So my trusty Specialized Tri-Cross Singlecross that I have been using as my commuter/daily-driver has developed a bit of a problem... a few, actually. First of all, I started hearing a knocking coming from somewhere!! I checked the fenders, the racks, the basket, anything that could have been loose... to no avail. I even brought it to the LBS -- one of the mechanics took it for a ride and could not quite pin-point what it was. He ultimately suggested that I start by repacking any part of the bike with bearings (BB, headset, hubs, etc...) till I found it; well, I did, and thankfully it was the first thing I pulled apart... the front wheel-hub. A rusted or ruined bearing of some sort; well, I can't afford a new wheel or new decent hub, so I just repacked it (but I will be replacing the bearings in the not-too-distant-future).

So nearly as soon as that problem was diagnosed...

...the other day, as I started home from work, I heard a sound I have not heard since before I got this bike, a sound not heard since the days of riding the old Fuji every day...

...the crack and bang of a spoke breaking.

Now, I know that I have probably (does a few quick calculations) put around 2000 miles on this bike since I bought it in November of last year ('09, for the record) but I wasn't expecting to start hearing spokes break... well, I went and got a new spoke and replaced the broken one... and not a day later another one breaks!!

I got the Tricross because it is technically a Cyclo-cross bike and I wanted something that could stand up to both the harsh New England Winters and the terrible pot-holes and ruts of the Metro-Boston streets.

Considering I am 6'1" and hover around "Clydesdale" weight (200lbs) I guess it's stood up pretty well for having been ridden nearly every day for the past 8 months... not to mention the fact that a good 90% of the time I am riding it I am hauling around 20+lbs in the basket... As a matter of fact, during my semester at school , I was carrying sketchbooks, clothes, shoes, paints, and other various art supplies on a daily basis...

...perhaps a bit much for the poor thing, eh?

I guess that a little maintenance was inevitable... hopefully it won't be every week like my old Univega got to be!

Normally, the 2 bikes that are locked to the racks outside my local supermarket are the same 2 that have been perpetually locked there (and I suspect, abandoned ) since last Fall:

It's really too bad, because the bike in the bottom pic (a Fuji Sagres Mixte of unknown year) is actually quite nice... well, it was before the chain rusted solid... (on a quick side note; if anyone knows what the policy for abandoned bikes is for the city of Cambridge is, let me know.)

...But as I was saying...

...I was presently perusing pathways of produce, potables, and perishables, when I saw a young(ish) couple shopping together. The gentleman was wearing a t-shirt that said "Seven" in the Seven Cycles font (as both a art&design geek AND a bicycle geek, I tend to notice little nuances like that). I didn't actually think much of it until I got outside and saw the following:

I put 2 and 2 together pretty quickly at that point ;) They look like they are set up as "daily drivers" -- the smaller bike with straight bars and cantilever breaks, the larger with disc brakes, and both with touring rather than "road" size tires -- except that there aren't any racks, fenders, or other peripherals to aid practicality...

...now just so you know, I am NOT placing a value judgment on the owners of these bikes... I would not deign to sully such beautiful frames with such items...

...love them. :)

...but it is incredibly delightlful! So much so, that it seems like everyone and their mother is out on the streets in some form or fashion. I have stopped riding the CRBP (Charles River Bike Path) for my daily commute, since it has become overrun with joggers, runners, dog walkers PLEASE put your dog on a leash, please!! I love animals and would feel horrible if your pet dashed in front of me and was hit because of your negligence., and any number of people wandering around aimlessly on foot or bike with various types of electronics inhibiting their senses...

So yeah... by comparison, Mass Ave through Central Sq is preferable... and I was hit in Central a few weeks back! (just a bump into someones mirror who pulled into the bike-lane to park without signaling...and by some good grace there was no injury/damage )

So... diatribe and digression aside, I came across this interesting sight while waiting at the lights at River, Prospect, and Mass Ave the other day:

It's been a while...

...since I have made a bike related post, but now that the bustle of the semester has subsided, and the cycling season has officially gotten into full-swing, I really should take a few minutes and do that!

You may or may not know that, even though I have not been blogging about it, I have been riding -- everyday, as a matter of fact! Well... I DO bike-commute, and I also tend to ride around as my primary means of transportation AND ride my mountain bike (more soon, I promise!!) and road bike for pleasure, fun, and fitness!!

So that's a lot of biking I haven't been talking about!!

What can I say? Over the last few moths there have been close-calls, yelling, honking, a "bike-to-work" week, a few broken spokes, a mysterious knocking from somewhere on my bike (traced to a bad bearing in my front wheel hub), thunderstorms, lovely rides, sun, things being lost (and found again) out of my basket, "fixter" encounters, and a myriad of other velo-related (some bad, most good) goings on... far too many to really rehash here today, and most are minutiae lost in the shuffle which only had relevance in the immediacy of their occurrence.

Coming up there are a multitude of local biking events, and I am participating in the

Cape Cod Getaway to benefit Multiple Sclerosis research

, 175 miles over 2 days, in a mere 3 weeks!

Well... onto a few recent things:

The photos above are the Southern edge of the storm cell of a thunderstorm we had last week, while the images below are about 3 blocks North, over the Charles... I saw several lighting bolts but was unable to capture any "on film".

We here in the Boston area have been experiencing a pretty impressive amount of Thunderstorms as of late -- this makes biking a little more exciting than usual... now, I don't much care for rain or riding in said rain, but when it's 90º+ and oppressively humid, a little water can feel pretty damned good on the face... though I can do without the hurricane force wind gusts and booming thunder and lightning!

A day or two later, I come out of work to find that someone has used my bike as a trash receptacle. Now, you may be surprised, but this happens at least once a week! Normally it's a soda can or piece of paper trash tossed in my basket, and not something standing on my front rack.

What baffles me the MOST, is that there is a city trashcan (rarely full) not 10 feet from where I park my bike... so these people are either specifically choosing to deface a bicycle, or they are the epitome of LAZY... either way it annoys me no end...

So, over the weekend we had yet another round of thunderstorms, and also 2 days of tornado warnings!! We here in New England rarely get these... but this weekend there was an actual tornado in New Hampshire! So I guess it was warranted... Now micro bursts and downdrafts are often confused with tornadoes, are far more common in New England, and often still rather destructive...

...after watching the news last night, and riding to work this morning, I think the area was hit with more than a few of these; here are some pics from my ride into the City along the Esplanade:

So my last post was not actually the "second to last" illustration class...

...There are 3 sections of illustration classes over the course of this past semester; and, since one of the ones I was in has ended, I decided to sit in on the other section... it, similar to my now ended section, is more theory and history of illustration based.

But back to tonight... I left a tad early and came home to work on my own things...

The class dwindled a bit tonight -- since day classes ended we lost a few students in all of my evening classes. My afternoon illustration class ended last week (it was a day class, after all) so these are the last days... :(

So, tonight we were drawing animals... some copy plates, some figurines. I decided to work from a figurine since (I admit) I need to work more on my drawing from observation.

My model:

Cute, isn't he? He's gotta be about 4-5" long... but really accurate (admittedly, I was surprised at how accurate "he" was). I did 2 drawings of him and here is the first!

He apparently likes to make sure I am doing a good job by "checking" my work =^.^=

Old work, new materials, crazy fun times in illustration class...

FIRST UP...

a little revisit to this unfinished drawing from a few weeks ago; somewhere, somehow this is a part of one of my final (I am doing 2 or 3) Illustration narratives.

NEXT UP

So there have been a few materials that I have been itching to use for the past while; one of these is walnut ink. (easy to make? find out!)

I learned about walnut ink (as well as other inks such as Iron Gall and the ubiquitous India) many years ago in the earlier days of my artistic education (and Modern Marvels), but never had I given much consideration to using it... I used India a lot back in the day, but gave it up in favor of a drafting ink (which technically IS an "India" ink... but whatever). But at the beginning of the semester I saw a few classmates working with Walnut ink and later found it was upon the suggestion of various instructors... my curiosity was, of course, piqued.

No art store had real Walnut ink in stock. "WHERE," I ask myself, (and no one else) "are all these kids getting all this Walnut ink?!"

Weeks... nay, months go by and come to find out that my school art store sells it.

I bought some...

...apparently some dude in Cambridge cooks up the stuff and sells it.

In the Fall, as others of you probably also have done, I have picked up the fallen walnuts, torn open the husks, had my hand stained for days, and wondered "I wonder what the heck this looks like on paper?"

...now is my chance! ;)

The other material I have been wanting to try is gouache. Yes yes, I am an aspiring illustrator and I have NEVER used gouache before... I can barely spell it! I am not going to be as long winded about it as I was with Walnut ink, but rather just let these few progress pieces speak for themselves...

It's like (tube) watercolor, but opaque... ish. A traditional illustrators medium.

Tonight was the last "drawing" class of the semester; next week is a semester crit of our work over this half of the school-year. I guess I'll worry about that come next week, but in the meantime (the in-between time) I'll offer up the drawings from tonight!

My instructor actually liked where I was heading with these -- and then I decided to get a bit wacky (ok ok... I got a bit tired and ran for my happy place; but I still tried to mix it up a bit)

Somehow in the midst of all my other posting and work I succeeded in neglecting to update the progress of this piece. It is, so you know, a portion of one of my final illustration projects.

Dioramas & Still-lives (Lifes?)... Illustration and Painting Class (Wk of 4/16)

As part of the final projects in my illustration class, we were asked to recall a strong memory (good or bad) where the location (or room) was a focal point... well, I was unable to conceive of a particular "event" so I just went with the room that my memory of is that strongest... that just so happens to be the bedroom I occupied in my mothers house during my High-school (and later pre-Ireland) years.

the old vines on the wall... and my uncles drafting table he let me borrow for many a year. The painting shown on the table here was not done back when I lived here, but rather in 2008... I just thought it would be fun ;)

Below you will see a little in-class work from last weeks illustration class... not thrilled with how it's turning out, but it does need a bit more work...

Below is some more illustration, but this time home-work. Since I was less-than-pleased with the previous incarnation of this copy-plate that I tried in a wash (the Moleskine does not seem to care very much for the wet media) I went back to a traditional pencil/graphite approach for this.

FOR MY PAINTING CLASS...

...we went back to the still-life. For this project we were glazing --
which is a style (or, technique) of oil painting.

I had finished the monochromatic under-painting, and so began the layering of colors onto the canvas...

Though the subject matter is far from exciting, I was quite pleased with the end result. (if you look closely, you can see a lot of color in the white walls and shadow)

A Drawing break-through? perhaps...

Well, faithful viewer, as time goes on and the lines between "sketch-book", "classwork", and "works in progress" become more blurred; my other blog (aptly named "@stroluc-sketchbook") will cease to be updated... any and all sketch work will most likely end up here since a lot of what is considered "sketch" is actually viable classwork... et cetera, et cetera, et al.

I think I might have, may have, perhaps, almost had a small (tiny) breakthrough in my drawing class... yes yes... THAT drawing class!

and somewhere towards the end of class... whether due to fatigue, hunger, or some other thing... something gave -- we started a 15 minute pose:

Madbird;

madbird is one gal who is married to one guy.
We're both art school grads living in Massachusetts with our four sons.

My dear and close friend has a company!

During one of my previous incarnations (and prior to my current time at the SMFA) I attended one of the (other) many art schools in the greater Boston area. During this time I met a number of people; but (for some reason) very few of these people turned into what may be lifelong friends...

...but the person behind madbird just might be one of those people!

By some grace of circumstance, we found each other via the ubiquitous facebook and have become friends again... the wonder of technology.

Got a lot in common, we do... the urge, need, compulsion to create is certainly one of those things. She is certainly carving out a life based around her artistic nature, and I have a lot of respect for what she is doing -- so I made this post to support her and her work!

Here is one of her wonderful creations:

Originally conceived as a crochet needle organizer, I expressed that I had an idea to use it as a brush/pecil/pen holder... now, there may be some of you who recall or know of the canvas brush-holders and how terrible they are...

Now, madbird does carry larger crotchet organizers (as well as a number of other products for your various needs), which can be uses for longer brushes, but this smaller size is ideal for my pencils, watercolor brushes, and caligraphy pens...

So far it is working out wonderfully! I love it.

As mentioned, it was not initially devised or designed to be a pen/brush holder, but it does very well doing just that... if you have need of anything like this or any other sort of organizer, (wallets, purses, bags, etc...) please go and show some support for a local (Boston area) artisan!

Illustration Class at the MFA! April 7, 2010

Last night in illustration class we went to the Museum of Fine Arts again (which, incidentally, is considered part of our campus and facilities) to draw from observation -- specifically to focus on drapery and cloth in the Greek and Roman sculpture galleries... see previous class visit here!

Here is the sculpture that I settled on; it's a representation of Athena.

Here is the record of my progress through the evening...

Now, the original statue has long since lost her head, hands, and arms -- and me being one who never likes his women handless, headless, or armless -- felt it incumbent upon me to once again bestow a cranium and digits, at least in representational form, to this goddess...

Underneath the sculpture and accompanying the description, there was a crudely drawn piece of line-art depicting what the head and hands may have looked like, and it was this that I used as a reference...

I'll add a better shot of this later, the lights in the MFA are great for viewing artwork, not photographing it.

More Studio Time ...

Well... I have had a lot of time (relatively "a lot") to spend in the studio since this past week has been "Spring Break". So, as any good young college student was drinking cheap tequila out of squirt bottles and acting in such a way that would (no doubt) impress the likes of Caligula and Bacchus; I was working and painting!

And, of course, like the good and diligent student I am, this painting I partook in was certainly class related~

Below is my "object" (part of a semester long project for my Drawing class).

I decided to paint it in an environment of light; as pertaining to the assignment for this week.

As for the painting I was working on before, I decided that now that I am adding color into the value underpainting, that I will limit my palette. So, below are three primaries plus white. Now, I may add French Ultramarine, Lemon Yellow, and Alizarin Crimson for a second triad of primaries... but primaries none the less...

Now, since I reached a point where I needed to let the above painting sit for a while and dry, I decided to start another painting; it is also somewhat related to classwork... and is also being done with a limited palette.

Studio time...

Well... this was actually the 3rd time this week I have made it into the studio to do a little work, and thankfully, I was at least as productive as the last time (which is a far cry better than the first time this week)... the neighbor was blasting some reggae, which is much nicer than the terrible rap, but the rap did start up and I eventually had to go over and ask them to turn it down... and thankfully this went without incident. (did I mention that they are there ALL THE TIME?!)

...well, frustrations seem to have begun last week with my painting class, so it stands to reason that things started to flow during my painting class this week ... it was a bit of a struggle and a rocky start, but I settled in and was mildly satisfied by my production:

What follows is from my most recent illustration class.

As you can see above, I started ambitious; but given that I was having a hard time conceiving the actions the figures I abandoned this drawing at the stage you see here (perhaps to be revisited in the future?).

So, as detailed before, I went to the brush and was able to salvage a little bit of the night...

There is a LOT wrong with it, but it could be a lot worse. Over-all, I like it.

(interspersed amongst my rantings... work from the most recent Drawing class)

ok ok ok... I get it.

So I am frustrated as all f_ck by my drawing class...

A bit o' background;

it's an intermediate to advanced figure drawing class taught by a highly respected artist.

THE FACTS:

I think my instructor is worthy of the respect he gets... he is a wonderful artist... BUT his philosophy seems to differ from mine immensely.

I am trying...

I am REALLY trying to "get" what he is saying... what he is trying to teach... I mean, some of the things he says make sense, and I buy it -- Like; it's about relationships... how does this relate to this? or For this to be true, this must be true. (with regard to proportion and/or figurative relationships). I know these things... and yeah, sometimes I need to know this and apply this more often than I do.

BUT...

...his disciplinary school of thought is radically different than mine. He seems to subscribe to Abstract Expressionism. Though I am not a realist, I certainly believe in some of the fundamentals of the realist school of thought... such as you must know a figure before you can abstract that figure. My instructor does not; and this is fine. I do not judge, valuate, or really have an opinion on what one subscribes their beliefs to...

...I just disagree.

Pure and simple.

So I am left trying to figure out a way to salvage the semester. I just say F it. Draw what I want and how I want, but still try to hear what he is saying about relationships... and f(orget) all this rigamarole about abstracting.

I want to be a better draughtsman, THAT is why I am in this class... to SEE better.

ugh... I wasn't feeling it this week... the paint just wasn't working for me. I was impatient and I used too much white and I let the colors mix and I didn't do a decent drawing of the subject and a whole ton of other things...

At this point, I was frustrated and decided to scrape as much paint off of it as possible...

After this I attacked it with a turpentine soaked rag and "erased" as much as is possible with oil paint. So... I was left with a smeared canvas, no work to show for the night (other than the photographs), and an as of yet unrealized artistic vision.

Wow, what a crazy night for weather, eh? Man... the wind was whipping and the rain was sideways and me (the smaht one ;) decided to ride today... no pics from that, but I do have a few pics from the past few weeks (do I keep saying that?) that I will be sharing sooner than later.

...but I realized that I had not been posting the process of my most recent painting. As I was held up in my apartment fighting the Great Dragon Cold of 2010 and not going outside, nevermind not going to work or school for nigh on a week, I painted... for the worst days of the illness I did nothing... but as I began to feel better I started painting this sketch that had been sitting dormant on my drafting table for the past few weeks...

Now, for those of you who may wonder about my "process"... I am not really sure that I have a process... I guess you could say that I paint more on feel rather than following a strict regimen of stages and steps… when a painting feels like it's done enough, it's done enough; when it says, "okay, it's time to let go a bit… come on, let loose!" it's time to do just that!

I must admit that it is a very different process to my drawing, as I am usually more exacting and precise in my graphite work... But that is also something that I have been trying to -- not necessarilly break away from -- loosen up a bit with… I think that a lot of my most recent pencil work shows a greater level of freedom and abandon where older work was more rigid.

Though there is a greater amount of looseness to my recent pencil work (and I think that this is greatly as a result of the calculated chaos of my watercolor style) I think all of my graphite work is more organic than technical... hmmnnn... why the heck am I talking so much about my pencil and not about my painting when that is what I am showing? Meh, who knows...

I guess it's all related like some artistic double helix or Ouroboros, always flowing, circling, and interweaving into and around itself...

...so what do you think so far? it's just about done...

Well... I have a proper studio space now!!

I just moved my things in there this past weekend and I am looking forward to utilizing it more over the Spring and Summer ... I am looking to explore my work in greater scale, and return to more oil work at the same time; this would be difficult to achieve in my apartment since I share it with 2 people, so a studio makes sense...

I think it does... for now, anyway! ;)

IN OTHER NEWS...

I have returned to school after a wretched cold knocked me out for a good 2 weeks; and though you can see my sketches from my drawing class in my sketchbook blog, I wanted to show you a few silly pics that I took during my illustration class...

We were doing object studies, and there was sculpting clay available for use to hold the round objects to keep them from moving... well, as is endemic to my nature, I fooled around with the clay and decided to document the results...

Not much to report as I have been sick as a dog the past 2 weeks, and as a result I have not been on the bike, I missed ALL of my classes last week, and tonight classes were canceled for the storm that isn't!

BUT...

...that does not mean that I have been lax; well... not completely. I did sign up for the charity ride I partake in...

This is the 4th year that I will be participating in a charity ride of some-sort; and the 3rd year that I will be riding in support of finding a cure for Multiple Sclerosis.

I do not have MS, that I am aware of, but I have a very close friend who has been diagnosed with it, and several of my friends have friends or family members who are afflicted by it -- so it is a personal thing for me to participate in this ride.

Every year the MS Society holds many different events across the US, and several of those take place right here in New England. 2 years ago I rode in the 157 mile Cape Cod Getaway. Last year I rode in the 100K Minuteman ride in Central MA, and this year I will be doing the Cape Cod Getaway again! Except this time I will be taking the 175 mile route that they are offering.

Back to Oil painting...

Well, it's been a while since I have put brush, oil, and canvas together... but I (re)started school this past week and getting dirty with some oil and solvent was part of the deal (and this was certainly by design) it stands to reason that I would be doing some painting!

Winter Commuting in New England...

Above is my "parking space" at work and below is the lovely Charles River Trail on this past New Years Eve... cold, snowing (well, was more like flurries) and very grey; but I liked it!

While I was riding to work on the first week of January I noticed this hazard to life and limb hanging from below the BU bridge. This, in case you cannot tell, is a jagged piece of rusted steel that must weigh about 80-100 lbs. The good news is, by the time I was riding home, it was no longer there and there was no gouge in the wood of the boardwalk. Also, it must be said that the bridge is currently undergoing renovations and this may have caused the piece of metal death to come loose. It also must be stated that today, I saw a barge parked under the bridge and I suspect that this was to begin repairing the structure underneath.

Below is me expressing my fright and concern at said jagged piece of death metal (no, not Sepultura ;)

Late last week, as I was walking from my parking space to my office, I noticed this nice little (and I mean little... it can't be any bigger than a 46 or 49cm) Royal H Cycle single-speed. It's messy from riding the Winter streets of Boston, and I am not sure if I would ride a Royal H in the wretched salt and filth, but at lest it's being ridden! ...and isn't that what bikes are for? ;)

SPEAKING of messy... below are a few pics of my commuter bike from last month when I switched my road tires for knobbies when the snow started to fall.

That red bike in the background is my lovely 1976 Fuji Sports 10 Single Speed. That is one of the smoothest bikes I have ever ridden, and prior to my current commuter, was my daily... a good 3000 miles went on that bike in the last few years and it's still kickin'

ok... this pic below is the bike I mentioned in my previous post, and it's still there in the river... embedded in ice. :/ This is a more recent shot, as well.

new sketches... and some masters!

On that note, I want to take a moment and highlight a few of my favorite artists.

As a preface, I have to come out and say that, though I am and have been a student of the arts for much of my life, I am woefully under-informed as to a lot of artists -- both contemporary and historical. Now this is not to say that I know nothing about Art History, just that I have spent more time trying to create art than learn about it's lineage.

Without further ado...

John Singer Sargent

I am not sure when or where I first noticed Sargent's work -- but it has been many years. I guess that his style is considered Realism, but it certainly is influenced but the expressionist movement. At first glance, his work can seem a bit stodgy -- but upon closer inspection his style shines and you can see these lovely and bold strokes of light and color which seem to depart form the super-smooth and (in my opinion) boring works of earlier in the 1800s

Norman Rockwell

Alphonse Mucha
What can I say about Mucha? Of all the artists here, I have probably been aware of, and a fan of his work the longest... I love the Art Nouveau aesthetic and always have. It is a bit unfortunate that, in this day and age, people see fit to just copy his works over and over again, rather than expand upon it...

Ack!!

Well, my last idea stalled as quick as it was conceived... I can't encapsulate the image I am trying to evoke... I need to learn how to draw (not being self-defeating, just a bit out-o-practice)

So in the interest of keeping the hands busy I painted this on New Years Eve...

It's a whole bunch of nothing... I had no idea, no sketch, and no concept when I started it... just a lot of paint.

I think it's okay as far as an abstraction of nothing goes; normally when you paint something abstract, you need to start with an actual form to abstract from... this is just splashes of paint.

After that I decided to look through a lot of my older work and I found these 2 paintings from a few years back that I felt needed revisiting... here they are "before":

I know it's hard to really see without a decent scan, but I think they are at least a little closer to being complete -- though, as I have said before, nothing is EVER "complete" ;)

January Shennanigans!

Well... it's been a few days since the New Year... and I achieved my (Pre)New Years Resolution to ride to work every single day up until the end of December. Now that it's January (and 2010!?) my next goal is to ride through February. It might be hard but we have already had days where there is 50+ mph winds and temps in the single digits (well below zero taking into account wind-chill!).

Unfortunately, I have not had much opportunity to photograph the lovely white fields of ice the Charles has become, or the cross-country skiing trail the Charles River Path becomes after a snow... for my hands have been sheathed in gloves that inhibit the use of my tiny tiny camera.

BUT...

...today I was treated to a few unique sights; so much so I had to stop and document them. So here they are!

As I was going along I saw the unmistakable visage of a bicycle poking it's way out of the ice near the Western Ave bridge... My suspicion is that it was stolen, ridden, and the disposed of over the side into the river... now this is a bit sad; I cannot tell what sort of bike this might be from my photographs, but no matter weather the bike is a $50 Wal-Mart special, or a pricey vintage to-do, this is no way to treat a bike...

...someone could've ridden it, and someone might have loved it... I'll check to see if someone "rescued" it tomorrow.

Now below we have someone who must be trying to get a Darwin award... You have to peer a bit but if you look close enough, you will see someone riding his bike on the ICE. Okay, yes... it's not on the river proper, but this is STILL river water (albeit protected) and the temps yesterday and today have been over freezing and it's been sunny... and there is still plenty of "open water" on the river as our temps keep fluctuating so I am not confident of going out on a frozen lake, nevermind riding my bike on a par-frozen river!!

2 words: NOT SMART.
